Make Combine and Rebel change stick

There is a resolution available for those who want to stick with Combine or Rebel
The problem exists since 2013 and was never resolved. Unfortunately we now have a solution.
Place the folder fix_model_change in your custom folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2 Deathmatch\hl2mp\custom
